Golf courses
Three championship courses, one resort
The Maples, Jones and Byrd all start from the resort, with one clubhouse for check in and carts. Play a different course each morning and never leave the gates.
-
The scenic one
The Maples Course
The original course and the one most guests ask for by name. Water is in play from the first hole, the fairways are wide and it is the shortest of the three, which makes it a good opening round for a mixed group. Restored in 2025 with new greens, rebuilt bunkers and wide natural areas.
About the Maples course -
The classic resort round
The Jones Course
The Rees Jones course is the long one, with rolling fairways, bold mounding and big greens that give you room to swing. It plays straight from the clubhouse, so the first tee and the restaurants are both a short walk from the villas beside it.
About the Jones course -
The thinking golfer's course
The Byrd Course
Tight, tree lined and strategic, with lakes guarding fairways and greens on both nines. The Willard Byrd course was rebuilt from tee to green in 2024, and it rewards the golfer who picks a line and commits to it.
About the Byrd course
Proximity to the beach
Sunset Beach is three miles from the gate
The resort sits on the mainland side of the Intracoastal Waterway, so the beach is a few minutes by car and the villa is still quiet at night. Golf in the morning, the sand in the afternoon, and a pool on the resort for the days in between.
- Sunset Beach, three miles away The island beach the town is named for is three miles from the south gate on Clubhouse Road. Cross the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean is in front of you, with public access points along the island and a fishing pier at the end of the main road.
- Bird Island and the Kindred Spirit mailbox Walk west along the sand at low tide and the beach runs into the Bird Island nature reserve, undeveloped and quiet. The Kindred Spirit mailbox sits in the dunes there, with notebooks that visitors have been writing in for decades.
- Ocean Isle and Calabash Ocean Isle Beach is the next island east, with its own pier, shops and the autumn oyster festival. Calabash, the fishing village to the west, is a ten minute drive and the place to go for fried seafood straight off the boat.
- Turtle season on the sand Loggerhead sea turtles nest on Sunset Beach from May into August and the hatchlings follow through October. Volunteers watch the nests and welcome visitors at a distance, so a summer stay can take in a nest boil on an evening walk.
Read more on the blog: turtle watch on Sunset Beach, the Fourth of July on the island and the summer market. Beach chairs and towels are not supplied with the villa, so bring your own or ask us about local rentals.
